IFTA Reporting

What is ifta reporting? IFTA reporting is the quarterly process of filing miles-per-state and fuel-purchased-per-state data so the base jurisdiction can settle fuel taxes across states.

Full definition

IFTA reporting requires per-state miles (from ELD or trip sheets) and per-state gallons (from fuel receipts or fuel card statements). The base state computes net taxes owed or refunded based on the carrier's MPG and the difference between miles run and fuel bought in each state.

Accuracy matters: audits look for missing receipts, gaps in mileage, and unexplained MPG swings. Most carriers retain receipts for four years.

Fuel cards that integrate with IFTA reporting tools — like RTS, EFS, or Comdata — eliminate most of the manual reconciliation work.
