IFTA
What is ifta? IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) is a single-license fuel tax reporting system for interstate carriers operating across the US and Canadian provinces.
Full definition
Before IFTA, carriers had to file separate fuel tax returns in every jurisdiction they crossed. Today, a carrier files one quarterly return with their base state, which redistributes taxes to the states where the carrier actually burned fuel.
Reporting is based on miles traveled per state and gallons purchased per state. Most ELDs and fleet management systems generate IFTA-ready reports automatically.
Late filings carry per-state penalties and can lead to license revocation. Quarters end March 31, June 30, September 30, December 31, with returns due the last day of the following month.
