ELD (Electronic Logging Device)

What is eld (electronic logging device)? An ELD is a hardware device or hardware-software combo that automatically records a driver's hours of service and engine activity, replacing paper logs.

Full definition

Since the 2017 ELD mandate, most commercial drivers must run an FMCSA-registered ELD. The device tracks engine on/off, miles driven, location, duty status changes, and total HOS.

ELDs feed roadside inspections, IFTA reports, dispatch tools, and CSA-relevant violations. Tampering or falsifying logs is a serious FMCSA violation.

Short-haul drivers, pre-2000 engines, and certain agricultural exemptions remain outside the mandate, but the bulk of long-haul truckers must run a compliant device.
