CSA Score

What is csa score? CSA scores are FMCSA's safety performance ratings of carriers across seven BASIC categories, used to prioritize roadside inspections and audits.

Full definition

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores rank carriers in seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories: Unsafe Driving, HOS Compliance, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazmat, and Crash Indicator.

A carrier's percentile in each BASIC determines inspection frequency, audit risk, and — critically for finance — insurance premium and broker access. Brokers commonly screen CSA before tendering loads.

Scores update monthly based on rolling 24-month inspection and crash data. Newer carriers with thin inspection histories often have artificially volatile scores.
