Fleet Card

What is fleet card? A fleet card is a payment card issued to a trucking company that controls fuel and related purchases, often with per-gallon discounts and IFTA reporting.

Full definition

Fleet cards differ from consumer credit cards in three ways: they enforce purchase categories (fuel only or fuel-plus), they aggregate IFTA-grade reporting by state and truck, and they negotiate per-gallon discounts at specific truck-stop networks.

The market splits between legacy issuers (Comdata, EFS) optimized for mid-size and large fleets, and newer entrants (AtoB, RTS, TCS) better suited to owner-operators and small fleets. The right card matches the truck stops on your actual lanes.

Some fleet cards (Comdata Smart Card) extend beyond fuel to maintenance and lodging with per-card spend controls. The granularity of controls is a real value-add for fleets running 10+ trucks.
