OTR (Over-the-Road)

What is otr (over-the-road)? OTR is long-haul trucking where the driver is away from home for days or weeks, running interstate lanes with sleeper-equipped tractors.

Full definition

OTR is the classic long-haul model. Drivers are out 7-21+ days at a stretch, sleep in the truck, and rack up high weekly mileage. The trade-off is pay (highest per-mile rates) versus home time (low).

OTR tractors are sleeper-equipped Class 8 trucks designed for extended living: bunks, microwave, fridge, sometimes APUs (auxiliary power units) to reduce idling.

For financing, OTR trucks command longer terms (60-72 months) and lower per-mile depreciation than local-haul trucks because they accumulate miles faster.
