Regional Haul
What is regional haul? Regional haul is freight running within a defined multi-state region, typically returning the driver home weekly.
Full definition
Regional haul sits between OTR (multi-week away) and local (home daily). Drivers typically run 500-1,000 mile lanes within a multi-state region — Southeast, Midwest, Northeast — and are home most weekends.
Regional pay per mile is slightly below OTR but the lifestyle premium attracts and retains drivers. Many large fleets target regional networks for this reason.
For financing, regional tractors are similar to OTR — sleeper equipped, full Class 8 — but accumulate miles slower, which can mean longer truck life and slightly favorable resale.
