Tractor

What is tractor? A tractor is the truck portion of a tractor-trailer — the powered unit with the cab and fifth wheel that pulls trailers.

Full definition

Class 8 tractors are the workhorses of long-haul trucking. They include the cab (day cab or sleeper), engine (typically 400-600 HP diesel), drivetrain, and fifth wheel for trailer connection.

New Class 8 tractors retail $150,000-$200,000+ depending on spec. Used tractors range from $30,000 (high-mileage workhorses) to $150,000 (low-mileage late-model).

For financing, the tractor is the collateral; lenders price based on age, miles, brand (Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, International), and the borrower's credit and revenue profile.
