GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
What is gvwr (gross vehicle weight rating)? GVWR is the manufacturer's maximum allowed total weight for a vehicle — tractor plus payload — at which the rig can safely operate.
Full definition
GVWR is a published spec on every commercial truck. Class 8 tractors typically rate 80,000 lbs GVWR (the federal interstate maximum), but some configurations and certain states (Michigan especially) permit higher.
For financing purposes, GVWR determines the eligible loan category. Lenders price differently for Class 8 vs Class 6/7 vs straight trucks, and the financing term often aligns to expected truck life at the rated weight.
Operating over GVWR is an FMCSA violation and an insurance claim disqualifier — carriers must size their hauls to the truck's rated capacity.
