Hazmat Endorsement

What is hazmat endorsement? A hazmat endorsement (H) on a CDL allows a driver to haul Hazardous Materials, requiring TSA background checks and additional state and federal testing.

Full definition

The hazmat endorsement opens access to higher-paying freight: chemicals, fuel, explosives, and industrial materials. Pay per mile on hazmat lanes typically runs 10-25% above comparable dry-van freight.

Getting the endorsement requires a TSA background check (Transportation Security Administration), federal fingerprinting, and a written knowledge test. Renewal is every 5 years with another background check.

For lenders, a hazmat endorsement signals a higher-earning driver — many financing programs price slightly better for hazmat-endorsed owner-operators. Insurance carriers price the trade-off differently: higher revenue but higher claim risk.
