Terminal

What is terminal? A terminal is a freight handling facility where carriers consolidate, sort, and dispatch loads — central to LTL, intermodal, and large-fleet operations.

Full definition

Terminals are the operational hubs of large freight networks. LTL carriers run terminal networks across all major metros. Intermodal terminals (rail-truck interface) sit at Class I rail hubs. Large carrier terminals serve as dispatch points, maintenance bases, and driver-change locations.

For owner-operators, terminal proximity affects lane access. Carriers with strong terminal networks (FedEx Freight, ABF, Old Dominion) dominate LTL; carriers without typically run truckload.

Terminal investments are major capital expenditures and signal long-term carrier commitment to a region.
