Dry Van

What is dry van? A dry van is the standard enclosed trailer (typically 53 feet) used to haul non-perishable, palletized freight, the most common trailer type in trucking.

Full definition

Dry van is the workhorse of US trucking. It is the most accessible segment for new owner-operators: equipment is cheap, freight is everywhere, and broker networks are deep.

The trade-off is rate. Dry van is the lowest-paying flatbed/reefer/dry-van split because supply is highest. Specialty equipment commands a premium but demands more capital and skill.

Dry van factoring, financing, and insurance are also the cheapest in the industry — competition among providers for the largest segment is intense.
